Navigating the Landscape: A Retrospective Journey Through Design and Development

“The way we think about space matters. It inflects our understandings of the world […] It affects, for instance, […] the way we approach cities, the way we develop, and practice, a sense of place.” – Doreen Massey

In this session, Janice will share her professional journey and insights gained from working as a landscape architect across diverse geographies and contexts. From her early career in the private sector to her recent role in the public sector, she will reflect on her project design experiences, critically re-examining selected projects through the lens of a developer-operator, offering a unique perspective on the vested interests and ever-changing decision-making mechanisms which is inherently intertwined with the production of the built environment.

Janice is a landscape architect and part-time tutor at the National University of Singapore. She teaches graduate and undergraduate design studio focusing on reserve sites in Singapore.

Prior to this, Janice worked in both public and private sectors providing technical consultancy services in nature-based solutions, landscape master planning, and strategic planning frameworks for projects in the US, China, and Singapore.  Janice has practiced at internationally renowned offices such as Sasaki (US), West 8 (NL), Reed Hilderbrand (US), and Henning Larsen Architects (formerly Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl) (SG).

She received a Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a BSLA from Cornell University.
