Master of Science, Integrated Sustainable Design
Curriculum and Course Structure
The four focus areas of the MSc ISD programme are integrated into a curriculum structure that fleshes out the challenges of Asia and offers an approach to tackling them. The centrepiece of the programme are two project-based courses in which students are tasked with a complex real-world problem. These two courses are backed by four lecture courses in which sustainability-related paradigms, principles, and strategies, are critically examined.
To be awarded the degree, a candidate must attain 40 Units made up of the following:
- 2 Integrated Project Studio Courses (8 Units each = 16 Units)
- 4 Lecture Courses (4 Units each = 16 Units)
- 2 Electives (4 Units each = 8 Units)

Programme

Electives are courses students select to augment core learning. Most MSc ISD students opt for courses from postgraduate courses in the College of Design and Environment, related to environmental design and sustainable development. At the start of each semester, the Programme Director releases a list of preapproved electives.
The Integrated Project Studio Courses are spread over the semester and the studio sessions take place over two afternoons a week – on Mondays and Thursdays.
Lecture Courses are taught during the day. Classes for these are either front loaded into 1 to 2 weeks at the start of the semester or conducted over 5 to 6 weeks during the semester.
The detailed schedule of classes for each semester will be released a couple of months ahead for students to plan their calendar.
Notes to Part-Time Students:
Part-time students complete the programme over four semesters (two years). They are required to take courses in a prescribed sequence.
In semesters 1 and 2, part-timers must complete the Lecture Courses. For this, they must arrange annual leave or time-off with their employer.
In semester 3 and 4, they must complete the two Integrated Project Studio Courses. A slot will be arranged after office hours, once or twice a week, for meetings between student and tutor.
Electives may be completed in any of the four semesters. Many part-timers pick the courses that are taught in the evening.
Part-time students may contact the Programme Director about one month prior to the start of a semester to request the finalised schedule.
