The key objective is to provide students with end-to-end coverage of the key steps between ideation of a medical device solution and its deployment into the market. A tightly regulated industry, the medical device sector presents unique challenges within the broader landscape of engineering and technology, thus requiring unique exposure and skills that MDDRA aims to provide.

Leveraging on existing partnerships with industry and trade organizations, the courses in the MDDRA provide an ideal platform to apply design and regulatory concepts in realistic healthcare scenarios.

Programme structure:
In order to be awarded the specialisation, students should obtain 20 Units from the following list of courses (4 units each): BN5001 – Independent Research Project *
BN5002 – Independent Research Project II *
BN5208 – Biomedical Quality and Regulatory Systems
BN5304 – Biomedical Engineering Practice and Innovation
BN5501 – The Biodesign Process of Innovation in Healthcare
BN5511A – Introduction to Global Medical Device Regulation
BN5513A – Medical Device Regulation in ASEAN and AsiaPacific
BN5517A – Pre-Market Requirements and Post Market Surveillance
BN5666 – Industrial Attachment *
*To be counted towards the specialisation requirements, the nature of the project/area of internship involved must be in the area of medical device design and regulatory affairs, asapproved by the Director of the M.Sc programme.

Specialisation in Tissue Engineering

The specialisation in Tissue Engineering consists of a curated basket of elective courses covering the fundamentals concepts and applications of tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering has been traditionally defined as an interdisciplinary field “combining the knowledge in the fields of cell biology, material science, engineering, and surgery to regenerate or replace injured tissues” (Chiu et al, 2011). Over the years, commercial applications of tissue engineering emerged in diverse areas of medicine such as bone and dental repair, wound care, cardiac and vascular regeneration. Many more avenues of tissue engineering research are active worldwide, aiming at replacing whole or parts of diseased organs. Interestingly, the fundamental concepts of tissue engineering have also been recently applied to the sustainability area, where food engineered in the lab has found the first commercial applications.

The key objective of this specialisation is to provide students with an appreciation of how diverse disciplines such as life sciences, materials science and engineering combine to tackle pressing medical problems and beyond. The basket of courses reflects this multi-disciplinary approach, where traditional life science topics are combined with engineering knowledge, to address important healthcare issues, and extending to include most modern application to food engineering.

Programme structure:
In order to be awarded the specialisation, students should obtain 20 Units from the following list of courses (4 units each): BN5001 –
