Problem statements originate from our clinical partners (e.g., NUH and SGH).

Starting in 2025, a clinical immersion programme with NUH was launched. Only NUS BME students can optionally apply at no extra cost. The programme consists of a clinical immersion phase at NUH (lectures by medical doctors, shadowing sessions, etc), followed by the identification of a problem statement that is relevant to a clinician. Students will then work in a small group to come up with a possible technological solution to the problem, and gain credits for the BN3101 graduation requirement.

The pioneering batch of BME students in the clinical immersion programme at NUH

Furthermore, student teams which perform well will be encouraged to participate in competitions with their projects. Accompanied by BME professors and staff, BME students would travel (at subsidized rates) to the destination country. Once there, they will interact with local healthcare stakeholders: doctors, nurses, students, hospital administrators, etc to identify a relevant clinical problem. Back in Singapore, students would then work towards a prototype solution that can potentially be deployed. Academic credits are obtainable for this work.

NUS BME students in Timor Leste

Trips to Timor Leste and Khon Kaen (Thailand) have been organized. It introduces students to the basic methodology of research in the context of a problem of current research interest. Duration of this module normally spans over two consecutive semesters.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

UROP is an individual academic research project you would undertake typically over two semesters or during the Special Term* anytime after your first semester, but before your final year. Successful completion of UROP counts as a 4-unit Unrestricted Elective. UROP is recommended if you wish to learn the skills of independent research. You may be supervised by a professor within the BME Department, or you may choose a project in another department, allowing you exposure to a different engineering discipline.

*Special Term fees apply if you choose to be on UROP over this period.

Independent Work/Study Modules

This course encourages students to become independent and self-motivated learners, and promote students’ interest in research-based work. It consists of a series of laboratory-based projects or other academic prescriptions for the students’ independent study. The academic scope is worked out between the student and the supervising faculty members.

Degree Programmes What is BME?
