National University of Singapore (NUS), through its Centre of Excellence in Modelling and Simulation for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP) and Centre for Next Generation Logistics (C4NGL), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) on the 25th October 2019.
The TNO-NUS MOU was signed by Professor Thean Voon-Yew Aaron, Dean, Faculty of Engineering for NUS and Ms. Ellen Lastdrager, Managing Director, TNO Traffic & Transport for TNO.
This is an international cooperation anticipating new urban mobility challenges under the Joint Innovation Program for New Urban Mobility led by TNO. TNO is working with private and public partners in an innovation ecosystem to jointly work towards a digital environment that balances public community interests with private interests, based on TNO’s Urban Strategy platform that simulates the impact of new mobility developments on the urban system.
Ms Ellen Lastdrager said, “Close collaboration between both of the countries in the Joint Innovation Program helps Smart Nation Singapore to remain at the forefront of smart urban mobility and offers TNO the opportunity to deal with major mobility issues in a future-proof manner – in Singapore, the Netherlands and beyond.”
Prof Aaron Thean said, “Netherlands, being the forerunner in the Logistics and Maritime technology, present opportunities for NUS to widen and deepen the research and development, especially for the digitalization in the Logistics and Maritime field, through the two centres: C4NGL and C4NGP.”
The C4NGP and C4NGL, together with TNO, will conduct joint research and development activities in the area of Modeling, Simulation & Optimization in the field of Smart Logistics and Smart Mobility.

The C4NGL is part of the NUS Smart Nation Research Cluster and supports and complements Singapore’s Smart Nation Initiative by developing analytics and optimization in the domain of logistics and warehouse.
C4NGL performs cutting-edge research expertise in logistics and supply chain management systems and delivers leading-edge systems design, research and developmental capabilities. We are creating supply chains that are more “Intelligent, Adaptive, Automated” and their commercialization is intended to achieve transformative economic and societal impact.
C4NGL is funded by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and works closely with government agencies and industries.
About Centre of Excellence in Modelling and Simulation for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP)
The C4NGP is part of the NUS Smart Nation Research Cluster and supports and complements Singapore’s Smart Nation Initiative by developing analytics and optimization in the maritime and ports domains.
C4NGP conducts state-of-the-art research in next generation ports, and their interactions with the surrounding ecosystem, to bring about significant impact on Research & Business Development activities contributing to Singapore’s economic development and society.
C4NGP is funded by Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and works closely with Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Jurong Port and PSA in modelling, simulation and optimization of next generation ports and maritime systems.
