Yang Yi

Senior Lecturer

Director (UG Programmes Outreach)

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Biography

Dr Yang Yi graduated from the National University of Singapore with a BEng and PhD in 2013 and 2017 respectively. He researched on the development of lightweight sustainable construction materials for his undergraduate thesis and subsequently delved into the study of the scaling effect for dynamic responses under blast and impact loading for his PhD dissertation.

After completing his PhD, Dr Yang joined Meinhardt, a civil and structural consultancy firm, where he conducted structural design for commercial, residential, and institutional building projects. His responsibilities also included coordinating with architects, contractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure timely progress of the projects.

Before Joining NUS in 2024, Dr Yang worked in the Sustainability Department of JTC, where he played a pivotal role in driving the organisation’s sustainability agenda. He led the development of a comprehensive sustainability master plan, defining the organisation’s decarbonization targets and strategies across the real estate value chain. Furthermore, Dr Yang spearheaded several of the organisation’s sustainability initiatives, focusing on reducing embodied carbon, deploying solar PV systems, and fostering sustainability engagement with the tenants.

In addition to driving sustainability at the corporate level, Dr Yang’s portfolio at JTC involved driving practical R&D in collaboration with universities, companies, and public agencies. These collaborative efforts focused on diverse aspects of sustainable estate development, spanning low-carbon building materials, advanced structural systems, waste treatment and recycling, and circular estate planning.
