Lianhe Zaobao<\/span>, one of Singapore\u2019s leading mainstream newspapers, published a feature report on PUB\u2019s plan to expand <\/span>pred<\/span>i<\/span>ctive maintenance across its critica<\/span>l water systems. Professor Hu Jiangyong, Director of the Centre for Water Research, was invited to share her expert views on the role of smart technologies in strengthenin<\/span>g the resilience and sustainability of Singapore\u2019s water system.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the interview, Prof. Hu highlighted that predictive maintenance represents an important shift from reactive repair to proactive infrastructure management. <\/span>By deploying int<\/span><\/p>\n

elligent Internet-of-Things sensors to collect real-time operational data, such as vibration signals, and analysing these data through cloud-based platforms, potential abnormalities can be identified at an early stage before equipment failure occurs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Hu further emphasized that such technologies are not only important for improving operational efficiency, but also for enhancing<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0the long-term reliability and resilience of Singapore\u2019s water infrastructure. Early detection and preventive maintenance can help extend equipment lifespan, reduce unexpected disruptions, optimize maintenance planning, and support more sustainable management of water assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

She also noted that the long-term development of Singapore\u2019s water sector is shaped by multiple factors, including infrastructure investment, water demand, environmental conditions, and climate adaptation needs. Prof. Hu’s views reflect a forward-looking vision for Singapore\u2019s water future: integrating smart sensing, digital analytics, and proactive management to build a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable water system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Hu\u2019s interview to the report also demonstrates CWR\u2019s active engagement with national water issues and its commitment to translating research expertise into practical insights for public communication, policy discussion, and real-world water management.<\/span><\/p>\n
