This year, the symposium placed a stronger focus on Tranche 2 projects, highlighting CFI Singapore’s ongoing research by Principal Investigators and addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels.

The symposium was honoured by the presence of Ms Goh Hanyan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, who served as the Guest of Honour, and Professor Koh Lian Pin, Vice President (Sustainability and Resilience) and Chief Sustainability Scientist at the National University of Singapore, as a Special Guest.

Throughout the day, attendees gained insights from keynote speakers Dr. Sutat Weesakul and Professor Hitoshi Tanaka, and engaged in panel discussions on flood management technologies, nature-based coastal protection, and sustainable urban planning. Dr. Sutat presented on Hydroinformatics for Flood Resilience: Thailand Case for Evolution, highlighting innovative approaches to enhance flood resilience in Thailand. Professor Tanaka shared lessons from Japan’s Tohoku region, showcasing post-2011 earthquake coastal restoration projects that combine hard and soft measures, as well as examples of climate-conscious coastal development. A central theme of the symposium was the importance of collaboration to accelerate scalable, innovative solutions, a spirit reflected in the lively discussions and shared commitment to advancing coastal resilience.

Another highlight of the day was the MoU New Partners Recognition ceremony, where CFI Singapore formally recognised six partner companies for their collaboration in coastal science research, implementation of nature-based solutions, and development of sustainable infrastructure for coastal protection and flood management.

The symposium was followed the next day by a half-day Rainfall Workshop, led by Professor Simone Fatichi, Deputy Director (Research) at CFI Singapore. The workshop focused on advancing knowledge and dialogue around convective storms and rainfall extremes in a changing climate, providing participants with exposure to state-of-the-art science and prediction methods. Attendees also learned how ongoing projects at CFI Singapore are shaping future directions in this critical area. The workshop offered a platform to exchange international perspectives, highlighting how water agencies and local authorities worldwide are preparing for intensifying rainfall extremes and their implications for flood resilience.

We extend our sincere thanks to the College of Design and Engineering (NUS), PUB, CFI consortium partners, and supporting organisations including the Sustainability and Resilience Office of the President (NUS), Singapore Water Association, The Institution of Structural Engineers (IstructE), and The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), for their invaluable support in making this symposium a success.

We look forward to welcoming you to future events! Stay tuned for upcoming initiatives as we continue to build on this exciting momentum in advancing coastal resilience and flood management solutions.

Recording of the symposium sessions will be shared soon.

 News Coverage

The CFI Annual Symposium has garnered attention from leading media outlets, showcasing the latest advancements in water research, climate resilience, and innovation. in total losses. In response, Thailand has steadily advanced its
hydroinformatics system to provide qualitied and reliable data for water management during
crisis.
The developed system integrates field observation technology with a decision support system for
flood forecasting, covering 73% of the country from upstream catchments to downstream
lowlands. Field operations using the system-both for training and actual flood response-have
been conducted annually. It has demonstrated that water management using hydroinformatics
as a resilient tool has successfully coped with recent major flood events.
Hydroinformatics has expanded its contribution to flood risk understanding, assessment, and
management, with applications that can be scaled down to the community level. The integration
of self-reliance, stakeholder engagement, and community empowerment has proven essential for
working in collaboration with hydroinformatics to achieve sustainable outcomes.
To meet growing data demands, the National Hydroinformatics Data Center (NHC) was
established. Currently, 54 member agencies share and utilize both online and offline data.
