Design systems to boost industrial productivity. The Industry 4.0 specialisation will equip students for the digitalized industry and the challenges associated.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0, is revolutionizing manufacturing processes by integrating operation and information technologies with the aim of increasing productivity. The advent of Industry 4.0 and availability of Big Data have transformed how industries manage operations, maintenance, and productivity. Sensor data generated from IoT-powered manufacturing systems enable the use of data analytics and machine learning for system health monitoring and optimization.

The advent of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is transforming production plants into cyber physical systems that generate Big Data throughout the operational life cycle. The large amounts of data and interconnectivity among machineries have led to new opportunities and challenges for the manufacturing industry. Digitalisation, a key component of Industry 4.0, achieves production optimization through real-time monitoring of asset performance, data analytics and predictive maintenance.

Structure of the Programme

You spend the first two years building a solid foundation in engineering. Specialisation starts from Stage 3. Students will need to complete 20 Units according to the following requirements:

Complete two compulsory courses (a) EE3331C Feedback Control Systems (4 Units) or ME2142 Feedback Control Systems and (b) EE3306 / ME3163 Introduction to Cyber Physical Systems (4 Units).

Complete three electives (12 Units) from a basket of courses.

Requirement – 20 units | 4-5 Electives

Two core courses
(8 Units)

EE3331C Feedback Control Systems or ME2142/ME3142 Feedback Control Systems

EE3306/ME3163 Introduction to Cyber Physical Systems

Three Electives
(12 Units)

EE4211 Data Science for IoT

EE4212 Computer Vision

EE4302 Advanced Control System

EE4307 Control System Design and Simulation (not offered in AY23/24)

EE4311 Fuzzy Logic and Neuro Fuzzy Systems

EE4312 Artificial Neural Networks

EE4314 Eyes from above: Guidance, Navigation and Control

EE4315 Intelligent Industrial Control Systems

ME3242 Automation

ME4262 Automation in Manufacturing

ME4248 Manufacturing Simulation and Data Communication

ME4246 Modern Control System

ME5405 Machine Vision

CN4227R Advanced Process Control

CN4221R Control of Industrial Processes

RB4301 Robot Learning

Careers

Industry 4.0 encompasses various areas, viz., Artificial Intelligence, Augmented & Virtual Reality, Blockchain, Collaborative Robotics, 3D Printing, Drones and Internet of Things (IoT). There is no integrated programme that brings together these areas. The programme is also targeted at engineering from various disciplines and focusses on practical applications.

With the specialisation, students will have basic knowledge with their University-wide and respective department requirements in the first two years. The Industry 4.0 specialisation is aimed to expose students to various relevant areas and prepare them for the fast-changing industry with digitalisation. The specialisation will enable the students to work in Industry 4.0 relevant areas.

The target industries are widespread due to the various areas related to Industry 4.0. The industries include advanced engineering sectors, manufacturing, healthcare, and service industries. Relevant job scopes include industrial automation, robotics, IoT, technology development, engineering support and preventive maintenance, new product development and process development.

Admission Requirements

The Industry 4.0 specialisation is aimed to prepare future ready graduates where digitalisation is transforming industries. With exposures along Industrial Automation, Internet of Things, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, the programme will ready the workforce for high-tech industries in Singapore.

You may apply for admission at the point of entry into the NUS BEng programmes in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
