(Chemical Engineering). It will expose students to safety regulations in the design, installation, and operation of chemical processes. Students taking this specialisation will be exposed to in-depth and practical understanding of safety and sustainability aspects in the design and operation of chemical processes. The Final Year Design Project and other courses listed under this specialisation provide practical and industrial exposure to students. Students pursuing this specialisation will become employable in a diverse range of major sectors in Singapore including oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, water and energy.

The broad learning outcomes of this specialisation are as follows:

Gain in-depth and practical understanding of safety and sustainability aspects in the design of chemical processes to transform raw materials into valuable products and appreciate the related responsibilities of process engineers.

Understand various methods for controlling process hazards and minimizing their associated risks.

Analyze and assess the potential impacts of hazards (e.g., loss of life, injuries, destruction of plant equipment, pollution) on safety, health, and the environment.

Recognize the importance of sustainability.

Communicate technical content in written and oral forms, with emphasis on organization, accuracy, and professional style.

Work effectively on the group activities.

Structure of the Programme (Applicable till 2024/2025 cohort)

Students will need to complete 20 units according to the following requirements:

Complete CN4119 Final Year Design Project (8 units)

Complete CN4235 Chemical Process Safety (4 units)

Complete two electives (8 units) from the basket of courses

Requirements – 20 units | Final Year Design Project | Chemical Process Safety | 2 Technical Electives

Compulsory Courses (12 units)

CN4119 Final Year Design Project (8 units)
CN4235 Chemical Process Safety (4 units)

Two Electives (8 units)

CN4205R Pinch Analysis and Process Integration
CN4221R Control of Industrial Processes
CN4248 Sustainable Process Development
CN4252 H2 and Low Carbon Technologies: Industry Perspectives
CN5203 Circular Economy in the Chemical Industry
CN5204 Green Chemical Process and Technology
CN5207 Energy Transition Toward Net Zero
CN5301 Sustainability Strategies for Energy Systems
CN5303 Industrial Case Studies for Renewable Energy Systems
SH5003 Fundamentals in Environmental Protection
SH5407 Sustainable Energy and Environment
SH5409 Sustainability and Environmental Analysis
CN5190 Hydrogen Energy and Technology

Double-counting of Specialisation

For each Specialisation, up to 8 units (40% of the units requirements for a Specialisation) may be double counted and used to meet (i) the Specialisation requirement and (ii) another requirement, e.g., General Education (only for students admitted from AY2021/2022 onwards), College (e.g., Common Curriculum), Faculty, Second Major, Minor, Specialisation or other requirement, i.e., at least 12 units of the Specialisation must be distinct and not overlapping https://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/academic-information-policies/undergraduate-students/special-programmes/specialisations

If you intend to do a double specialisation, you are not allowed to use CN4119 from the first specialisation (e.g. Safety and Sustainability Specialisation) to be double counted towards the second specialisation (e.g. Process Engineering Specialisation). Some well-known incidents partly prompted the increased awareness and attention to safety regulations. The industry is not fully sustainable just because it is economically viable, it also needs to be environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Sustainable production involves the development of products and services by processes and procedures that are pollution-free, energy-efficient, cost-effective, secure and safe for individuals working at the plant site, communities, and consumers, and socially favourable to all the stakeholders.

Admission Requirements

Students admitted to B.Eng.
