With the nation’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, hydrogen is set to play a crucial role in decarbonising industries such as power generation, maritime, and chemicals.

As hydrogen becomes increasingly vital across various industries, there is a rising demand for professionals skilled in hydrogen technologies. This Minor equips students with the expertise needed to support Singapore’s hydrogen initiatives and contribute to the nation’s sustainable energy ambitions. Graduates will be well-prepared to meet industry needs and pursue research and development in hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation-essential areas for Singapore’s energy future.

The broad learning outcomes of this minor are as follows:

Gain comprehensive and practical knowledge in hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation technologies.

Develop an understanding of the regulatory, safety, and ethical considerations in hydrogen technology applications.

Understand hydrogen technologies as systems of interconnected components, encompassing chemical, physical, environmental, and economic aspects.

Apply basic simulation tools and methods to understand and analyse hydrogen systems.

Develop skills to work effectively in team settings, particularly in interdisciplinary groups.

Acquire effective oral and written skills to convey complex concepts in hydrogen technologies to diverse audiences.

Requirement for Minor

Students will need to complete 20 units according to the following requirements:

Requirements – 20 units | Three Compulsory Courses | Two Electives

Compulsory Courses
(12 units)

CN1101A Chemical Engineering Principles and Practice I OR MLE1001B Materials Science & Engineering Principles & Practice 1

CN2103 Material and Energy Balances

CN4252 H2 and Low Carbon Technologies: Industry Perspectives

Electives
(8 units)

CN4235 Chemical Process Safety

CN5190 Hydrogen Energy and Technology

MLE2102 Thermodynamics and Renewable Energy Technologies

MLE4210 Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion

MLE4221 Emerging Materials for Renewable Fuels and Clean Water

Application

Students will be able to declare the minor themselves in the Academic Plan Declaration Exercise (APAD) before CourseReg begins – by their 5th Academic Plan Declaration exercise.

Refer: NUS Double-counting policy for Minor

What is ChE?
