Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\t

Singapore’s urban planning faces systemic challenges arising from climate change, demographic shifts, technological advancements, and evolving lifestyles. At the same time, these pressures create opportunities to innovate and adapt town planning models to new societal and environmental imperatives. The redevelopment of Paya Lebar Airbase (PLAB), slated for 2035 to 2050, presents a pivotal chance to reimagine urban planning, enabling the creation of a sustainable, healthy, inclusive, and future-ready township for 450,000 residents, while safeguarding and enhancing built and natural heritage.<\/p>\n

The NUS Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities (CSAC), in collaboration with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), brought together a multidisciplinary team to redesign the 1,870-hectare site comprising PLAB and its surroundings. Building upon CSAC’s work on the “1-minute neighbourhood” at Dover Road, this study refines the land use concept of “bands” applied at various scales to boost accessibility, connectivity, and urban convenience. Neighbourhoods are structured to prioritise active mobility, job accessibility, and vibrant social and commercial spaces, nurturing social cohesion and age-friendly environments. Distinct districts with integrated functions ensure seamless alignment with adjacent townships and the broader environment. Analytical studies demonstrate how this approach enhances accessibility and sustainability, safeguards environmental performance, and fosters resilient, complete communities.<\/p>\n

CSAC’s research on PLAB Redevelopment proposes a novel planning framework designed for adaptability, resilience, and future readiness, capable of supporting demographic shifts, evolving lifestyles and work practices in Singapore’s urban landscape.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"PLAB1\"\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
