KAREL KABELE (DR)

Visiting Professor

Department of the Built Environment

College of Design and Engineering

As full-time Professor, Head of the Department of Building Services Engineering and Vice-dean at the Faculty of
Civil Engineering of Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), Karel Kabele offers an excellent academic
background in the field of energy systems related to buildings. He has extensive experience in many areas
associated with the methodology of efficient building design, including energy conservation, computer modelling
and simulation of energy and environmental performance, energy auditing, indoor environment prediction tools,
heating and sanitary systems design. During his academic career of 30 years he has played a central role in the
preparation of educational and professional materials and has developed excellent trainings skills through many
years of delivering a wide variety of educational courses and seminars. He is guarantee of CTU master study
programs “Buildings and Environment” and interdisciplinary “Intelligent Buildings’. Prof. Kabele built Indoor
environmental quality research group at University Centre of Energy Efficient Buildings at CTU. Until 2017 he
supervised 11 successful PhD students and more than 110 MSc thesis, is author and co-author of more than
120 international and national conference papers, journal articles and book chapters. He was invited as visiting
professor at National University of Singapore in 2007, 2011 and 2013, as external examiner at Hong Kong
Polytechnic University and Technical University of Vienna, Austria. He passed through internships in Scotland
(University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, USA (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) in the field of building energy
systems modelling and assessment. Karel Kabele has wide international experience from co-operation with
partners in the frame of international projects (Scotland, UK, France, Greece, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland,
Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Slovakia and Slovenia).

As authorised engineer, specialist for building energy systems design and energy auditing has since 1990
experience in design, education and reviewing of building energy performance and building energy systems. He
is an author of several educational tools for building energy systems design with energy performance
calculation; he designed or reviewed more than 500 systems design. His team developed in 2009 National
calculation tool for building certification in the Czech Republic for EPBD implementation.

Besides his university duties he, as ASHRAE member and president of Society of Environmental Engineering
(professional organisation of more than 1300 engineers and technicians) participates in organisation of training
courses for engineers and designers in the field of building energy systems, indoor environment, energy
auditing. He is also member of editorial board of the international journal Energy and Buildings, elected board
member of Czech Chamber of Authorised Engineers and Technicians, and founding board member of IBPSA-
CZ (International building performance simulation association). In the years 2000-2009 he was member of
IBPSA world board. Since 2008 he acts as vice-president and 2013-2016 as president of REHVA (Federation of
European HVAC associations).
