Dear students, alumni, colleagues, and partners of CDE,

As a research-intensive university, NUS has long cultivated deep research expertise and offers ample opportunities for students to delve into research in areas of their interest and explore the application of research output through innovation and entrepreneurship activities.

CDE has a long history of research excellence, and since the merger, multi- and inter-disciplinary projects, programmes and platforms have sprung up, extending further opportunities to create impact in a broad spectrum of areas. The College hosts the Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI Singapore), the nation’s first Centre of Excellence dedicated to strengthening local capabilities and expertise in coastal protection and flood management research and solution development. This past month, CFI Singapore showcased nine research projects at the Singapore International Water Week, led by researchers from across NUS, NTU and SIT.

NUS Cities, an education and research unit in CDE, was also present at another international stage, the World Cities Summit, this past month, and it showcased projects from CDE students, faculty, and staff. Both CFI Singapore and NUS Cities are dedicated to nurturing new talent in their respective areas able to deal with the current and emerging issues that face us.

This month, we announced the winners of the AY2023/2024 NUS Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize (OURP) and CDE Innovation & Research Award (IRA). The winners come from across CDE, including industrial design, biomedical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering—a testament to the diversity of research opportunities available here for our students.

It is exciting to see work being undertaken at all levels across the College, andĀ I look forward to seeing more of our researchers creating a real impact on the world around us.

Professor Teo Kie Leong
Dean
College of Design and Engineering (CDE)

Shaping the Future of Human-Robot Collaboration

Across leading research institutions, robotics research is increasingly focused on extending human capability through meaningful human–robot collaboration. At Stanford University, this work is particularly focused on environments that are hazardous, remote, or otherwise inaccessible to people; by physically distancing humans from danger while still enabling their skills, intuition, and experience to guide robotic systems, they […]

Reflections and Experiments in Contemporary Korean Housing

This talk examines collective housing in contemporary Korea against an ethical vacuum produced in the process of modernisation in East Asia. This condition arises from the destabilisation of family-based ethics and the incomplete formation of civic ethics. Within this condition, the talk reframes the prevalence of apartment housing in Korea—often developed as large, semi-gated communities—not […]
