Photo credit: James Dyson Award Foundation\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A team of young inventors from NUS Engineering have been named as global winners of the prestigious James Dyson Award, the first time in the Award\u2019s 17-year history that a Singapore team has won the award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The team\u2019s winning design, a wearable device called Home Eye Pressure E-skin Sensor (HOPES), uses advanced sensor technology and artificial intelligence that allows glaucoma patients to easily and painlessly monitor their condition at home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">HOPES was selected as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cde.nus.edu.sg\/news\/glaucoma-sensor-team-wins-national-dyson-design-award\/\">Singapore National Winner of the Award earlier this year<\/a>\u00a0and subsequently shortlisted into the International Top 20 from among 83 national finalists from 28 countries and regions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The shortlisted teams were reviewed by Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer at Dyson, who crowned HOPES as this year\u2019s International Winner. They were supervised and supported by President\u2019s Assistant Professor Benjamin Tee (Department of Materials Science and Engineering &amp; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The team told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/parenting-education\/nus-students-win-top-international-james-dyson-award-with-glaucoma\">Straits Times<\/a>\u00a0they were \u201cstunned\u201d to hear about the win directly from James Dyson himself in a surprise video call.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe were told that the judging process was still ongoing and that the panel had more questions,\u201d Yu Kelu told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cSo we were shocked when Mr Dyson himself appeared on the video call. And when he told us we had won the top prize, it didn\u2019t quite sink in at first. It was only after the call that we realised what a big thing this was. We started cheering and I even cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Critical tool<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The HOPES device enables patients to conduct intraocular pressure (IOP) tests themselves, conveniently and with a much higher degree of accuracy than currently available tests. This Award will enable us to further improve HOPES to benefit glaucoma patients in Singapore and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u2018Vital test\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Congratulating Team HOPES, Sir James Dyson said: \u201cI\u2019ve experienced first-hand how invasive and unpleasant the tests for glaucoma can be, but it is a vital test. This group of young people have tackled a problem that doesn\u2019t affect them directly, but which affects members of their family. They exemplify our aspiration to bring technological impact through the integration of creative design, engineering ingenuity, and deep appreciation of human and societal needs.
