By processing information closer to where it is acquired, such systems could reduce data-transfer requirements, latency and energy consumption, paving the way for more efficient edge-AI technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1445\">Led by Prof Ang, the research team examines how the unique properties of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures can enable biomimetic sensory and synaptic functionalities. These include mechanisms such as photovoltaic effects, ferroelectricity, conductive filaments, and charge trapping and detrapping dynamics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1447\" data-end=\"1807\">The review further highlights emerging applications in retinomorphic vision, reservoir computing, motion detection, LiDAR-inspired processing and multimodal sensory fusion. Together, these developments point towards compact, adaptive and energy-efficient intelligent sensing systems for applications ranging from IoT devices to future edge-AI technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2105\">The work brings together interdisciplinary expertise across 2D materials, neuromorphic devices, optoelectronic sensing and edge computing, providing a comprehensive perspective on how advances in materials and device engineering can contribute to next-generation intelligent sensory hardware.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2326\">The Nanoscale Horizons Outstanding Review recognition highlights the review&#8217;s contribution in consolidating developments across these rapidly evolving fields and identifying promising directions for
