In line with this year’s theme on climate change, our iDP students proposed and conceptualised EclipseSat, a 12U nanosatellite that orbits in sun-synchronous low earth orbit to capture photographs of cities at night to measure the level of light pollution. It uses a spectrometer and decomposes the light captured into specific wavelengths, analyses the types of light bulbs that are used by a city, and determines how these light bulbs affect the city’s energy consumption.

This winning submission is an extension of the case study made by the students for the iDP course/module EG2311 Introduction to Space Systems which is taught by Mr Eugene Ee, Mr Sing Seng Teck, and Mr Soh Eng Keng.

Congratulations to our team of iDP students who won the Grand Prize at this year’s International Space Challenge 2023!
