It requires a good source of illumination inside the eye so that the procedure can be performed safely. However, the conventional approach of using a hand-held light pipe is invasive, requires constant adjustments by the surgeon, prevents bimanual operation, and creates shadows because it is a single source of illumination. These issues may lead to increased risk of complication during surgery.

To address this problem, this project explores the design of a wearable contact lens illuminator to provide illumination for vitrectomy. Unlike conventional methods, this solution is non-intrusive and allows bimanual operation. Using multiple light sources, it also provides shadowless illumination which can significantly enhance the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

Project Team

Student:

Yang Mingke (Electrical Engineering, Class of 2023)

Supervisor:

Jerald Yoo (jyoo@nus.edu.sg)

Wireless non-intrusive illumination solution for vitrectomy surgery Vitrectomy is a type of eye surgery to treat various problems with the retina and vitreous.
