By combining engineering insights with practical healthcare perspectives, students develop critical problem-solving and design-thinking skills essential for driving meaningful advancements in healthcare technology.

Each year, the studio collaborates with clinicians on a chosen healthcare theme. Last year, students tackled challenges in dentistry, working closely with experts in oral health. This year, the focus has shifted to women’s health, providing an opportunity to address significant needs in this area. Through exposure to diverse clinical themes, the MedTech Innovation Studio broadens students’ understanding of healthcare innovation, preparing them to contribute effectively across various medical fields.

Examples from past years:

Systems for improved mini-screw placement during orthodontic procedures. This project aims to develop systems that enhance the precision and stability of mini-screw placement in orthodontic procedures, leading to reduced complications and improved treatment outcomes. The goal is a reliable, clinician-friendly solution that ensures consistent performance in varied clinical scenarios.

Fetal Monitoring in the Labour Ward. This project focuses on advancing fetal monitoring systems in the labour ward to improve the accuracy and timeliness of data on fetal well-being. By enhancing real-time monitoring capabilities, it aims to support clinicians in making informed decisions during labour. The goal is a user-centred solution that enhances both safety and clinical workflow.

Project partner: National University Health System

Project supervisors:

Dr Mark Chong (bieskmc@nus.edu.sg)

Dr Tang Kok Zuea (kz.tang@nus.edu.sg)

Studio timeslot in Semester 2 AY2024/2025:

Thursday 1 pm to 4 pm @ iDP Studio 2 (E2A-03-01)

MedTech Innovation Studio The MedTech Innovation Studio immerses students in addressing real-world healthcare challenges using the Biodesign methodology, with a focus on specifying clinical needs, developing solutions, and implementing impactful innovations.
