The team’s overarching goal is to translate clinical and operational problems into innovative, practical solutions that enhance patient care, improve clinical efficiency, and advance healthcare technologies.

The collaboration bridges clinical insights, academic research, and industry expertise, creating a pipeline from problem identification to prototype implementation. The team is interdisciplinary, comprising members from diverse domains to ensure a comprehensive approach to problem-solving. From identifying problems and issues to solving the problems and implementing solutions, there will be lots of opportunities for our student teams to co-design solutions with clinicians, patients and other stakeholders.

Potential problem statements in this studio:

Create virtual reality simulation training module for contrast study of the gastrointestinal track in babies.

Bioabsorbable flexible titanium intramedullary nails for fracture fixation of paediatric long bones.

Limb holder: pre-operative clean and drape requires an assistant to hold the limb while cleansing. The aim is to free up the assistant for other surgical room tasks.

Tendon injuries are one of the more common injuries, and even with primary repair, protected rehabilitation over 3 months is required. A solution related to tendon securement is sought.

Management of bone fractures and deformities rely on measurement of angles done manually in by the surgeon which is time consuming, and error prone due to x-ray rotation and surgeon inaccuracies. An AI inspired solution is sought.

IoT based monitoring of paediatric patients’ vital signs.

AI AMR robot to follow nurses during ward rounding.

POCT (point of care test) cartridge that reduces wastage and prevents blood clotting is sought for the paediatric wards.

A smart transport bag for doctors is required to store medicines, medical consumables and equipment for ambulatory patients.

Project partner:

KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital

Project supervisor:

Dr Tang Kok Zuea (kz.tang@nus.edu.sg)

Studio timeslot in Semester 2 AY2025/2026:

Wednesday 9 am to 12 pm

 Examples of past projects:

 MediMingle

In this project, we designed an interactive medication cup that helps make medicine time more engaging and comfortable for young children.

 Adjustable precrawler

In this project, we developed an adjustable, semi-automated pre-crawling therapy device to provide 3 to 9 month old infants with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Down Syndrome with consistent and frequent therapy sessions to help reduce the development gap in comparison to that of a typically developing infant.

Baby ANDI: nasogastric tube training device for caregivers

In this project, we designed an Accurate Nasogastric Device for Insertion (ANDI) to improve caregiver confidence by providing a realistic simulation of nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion for paediatric patients.

Innovating for Paediatric Care This growing studio aims to tackle real-world healthcare challenges identified by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) and its industry collaborators.
