By combining engineering insights with practical healthcare perspectives, students develop critical problem-solving and design-thinking skills essential for driving meaningful advancements in healthcare technology.

Each year, the studio collaborates with clinicians on a chosen healthcare theme. In 2023, students tackled challenges in dentistry, working closely with experts in oral health. In 2024, the focus shifted to women’s health, providing an opportunity to address significant needs in this area. Through exposure to diverse clinical themes, the MedTech Innovation Studio broadens students’ understanding of healthcare innovation, preparing them to contribute effectively across various medical fields.

Project partner: National University Health System

Project supervisors:

Dr Mark Chong (bieskmc@nus.edu.sg)

Dr Tang Kok Zuea (kz.tang@nus.edu.sg)

Studio timeslot in Semester 2 AY2025/2026:

Thursday 1 pm to 4 pm

 Examples of past projects:

Hydrolyte: bioimpedance for intravascular volume status assessment

This project aims to guide timely and appropriate treatment decisions for patients with low sodium concentrations via a non-invasive bioimpedance device that monitors fluid status.

ReLief: non-hospital based ascitic fluid drainage

Patients with refractory ascites currently require frequent hospital visits to drain ascitic fluid and current home-based options are either costly or have high risks of complications.
