As a student in the Innovation &amp; Design Programme, you can participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/engineeringchallenges.org\/GrandChallengeScholarsProgram.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grand Challenges Scholars Programme (GCSP)<\/a>\u00a0endorsed by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Challenges Scholars Programme comprises five components that are designed to prepare students to be the generation that solves the grand challenges facing society in this century. A GSCP mentor will guide you through the following components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Talent<\/strong> <strong>competency<\/strong>: mentored research or creative experience on a Grand Challenge-like topic (see the list of Grand Challenges below).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multidisciplinary<\/strong> <strong>competency<\/strong>: understanding multidisciplinarity of engineering systems and solutions developed through personal engagement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viable business or entrepreneurship competency<\/strong>: understanding, preferably developed through experience, of the necessity of a viable business model for suitable implementation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multicultural<\/strong> <strong>competency<\/strong>: understanding different cultures, preferably through multicultural experiences, to ensure cultural acceptance of proposed engineering solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social<\/strong> <strong>consciousness competency<\/strong>: understanding that engineering solutions should primarily serve people and society reflecting social consciousness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The programme deliverables are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>GCSP Portfolio<\/strong>: a reflection on the work done for each of the components listed above.<\/li>\n<li>Service to the <strong>GCSP Community<\/strong> in NUS: support and mentor fellow scholars in the GCSP, take up leadership roles in GCSP activities, inspire junior students to join the GCSP, and outreach to other GCSP institutes and local pre-tertiary schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<h3>The Grand Challenges<\/h3>\n<p>The 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century identified by the NAE are as follows.
