After decades of leadership in the aviation industry, many would consider a successful executive career to be the culmination of a life’s work. For Dr. Faisal, however, leadership was never the destination – it was the beginning of asking deeper questions.<\/p>\n

Rather than pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy for another academic credential, he returned to NUS at the age of 53 with a clear purpose: to acquire knowledge that could help organisations, industries and society better navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As a part-time candidate, Dr. Faisal completed his doctorate in just four years while balancing the demands of leadership at work and life as a grandfather at home.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, he witnessed how global aviation and supply chains could be profoundly affected by events that few anticipated – the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, energy crises and disruptions to international logistics. These experiences inspired his doctoral research in Complexity Science, focusing on Managing Fat-Tail Risks in Global Supply Chains.<\/p>\n

His research examines how organisations can better understand uncertainty, anticipate rare but high-impact disruptions and build resilience within interconnected global networks. Rather than viewing supply chains as linear processes, Complexity Science recognises them as dynamic ecosystems where stakeholders continuously interact, adapt and influence one another.<\/p>\n

Today, Dr. Faisal serves as Vice President, Strategic Planning and Operations at AIRMARK Aviation, where research and practice converge every day. His responsibilities span long-term corporate strategy and the operational oversight of airline activities, including the development of flight schedules for international air cargo operations to achieve seamless regional and global connectivity. Balancing aircraft utilisation, regulatory requirements, operational resilience and commercial efficiency requires the very systems thinking that underpins his research.<\/p>\n

Beyond AIRMARK Aviation, Dr. Faisal actively contributes to regional aviation cooperation through ASEAN aviation working groups, engaging with civil aviation authorities, airlines, airport authorities, ground handling service providers and other key aviation stakeholders to strengthen regulatory cooperation, operational resilience and regional connectivity.<\/p>\n

One of the defining milestones of his doctoral journey came when he presented his research at the Complex Adaptive Systems Conference (CAS2025) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Presenting at one of the world’s leading academic institutions represented far more than personal achievement. It affirmed his belief that practical industry experience and rigorous academic research are complementary disciplines capable of generating meaningful solutions to society’s most complex challenges.<\/p>\n

Dr. Faisal firmly believes that every achievement is built upon the encouragement of others. He is deeply grateful to his family, colleagues and loved ones for their unwavering support throughout his doctoral journey. In particular, he credits his wife as his greatest source of inspiration. Her steadfast belief in his aspirations, patience and constant encouragement provided the strength to persevere through the many challenges of balancing professional responsibilities with academic pursuits.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, <\/strong>Dr. Faisal hopes to continue building bridges between academia, industry and public policy by advancing the application of Complexity Science in aviation and global supply chains, strengthening regional cooperation and mentoring future leaders committed to evidence-based decision-making and lifelong learning.<\/p>\n

For him, the doctorate was never simply about earning a degree. It was about fulfilling a responsibility.<\/p>\n

Knowledge finds its highest purpose when it benefits humanity.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
