AI is set to transform how we understand and respond to weather and climate risks.<\/p>\n

At the forefront of this shift,\u00a0Assistant Professor Gianmarco Mengaldo<\/a>\u00a0(Mechanical Engineering<\/a>) has been appointed to the\u00a0Joint Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence<\/a>\u00a0(JAG-AI) at the World Meteorological Organization, a by-invitation group of experts from around the world. The appointment recognises his expertise at the intersection of AI, weather and climate science, and strengthens Singapore\u2019s contribution to international efforts in this space.<\/p>\n

The group will guide how AI is integrated into global meteorological and hydrological systems, including improving forecasting capabilities and strengthening early warning systems. The WMO has identified AI as having the potential to significantly advance how weather and climate risks are understood and managed, while underscoring the need for scientific rigour and responsible use .<\/p>\n

Asst Prof Mengaldo\u2019s research focuses on the use of AI and high-performance computing to improve weather and climate modelling, particularly for extreme events and risk prediction.<\/p>\n

Commenting on his appointment, he said: \u201cThis is a valuable opportunity to further strengthen Singapore\u2019s engagement in AI for weather and climate at the international level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Headquartered in Geneva, the\u00a0WMO is the United Nations\u2019 specialised agency for weather, climate and water<\/a>, coordinating global efforts to improve forecasting and early warning systems.<\/p>\n
