TODAY, Dean Chua Kee Chaing presented awards for research, teaching and service excellence to Engineering faculty members at the Faculty's Awards Ceremony. As benefitting the no-nonsense practical engineers they all are, the event was not a glitzy formal affair but a time to congratulate colleagues, and share in their achievements.
This was the first time the NUS Engineering Service Award was presented - to Professor Victor Shim - who had served 10 years as Vice-Dean External Relations and Outreach for the Faculty. He now serves the University as its Associate Vice President for the Global Relations Office.
Also a first for the Faculty was that the Innovative Teaching Award (Gold) went to a team of faculty members and not an individual. The team from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Mechanical Engineering Department, had worked for a year to develop and implement the Engineering Principles and Practice Programme for first-year students, recognised as the Faculty's emphasis on experiential learning for all Engineering freshmen.
Associate Professor Ashwin Khambadkone, Director of the NUS Global Engineering Programme, a member of the team, highlighted the commitment all members had given to the development of the programme - a project that had drawn resources from two departments. The event ended on a high note with Assoc Prof Ashwin sending out a resounding call that this "virus of learning" would spread like wildfire throughout the Faculty; a wish that was certainly supported by all present.
