CDE BME Academics Recognised for Outstanding Contributions to the International Development of Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine

Lim IUPESM Fellowship

Professor Lim Chwee Teck and Associate Professor Leo Hwa Liang, both from the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) were elected as Fellows of the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM) at the IUPESM World Congress 2022 which was held from 12 – 17 June 2022 at Marina Bay Sands. The Fellowships are awarded on the basis of outstanding contributions to the international development of physical and engineering sciences in medicine.

The IUPESM started in 1980 with 20,000 members from 54 countries. It represents an estimated total global workforce of 150,000 professionals from 98 countries. Professor James Goh from BME was the first from NUS to be elected to the Fellowship in 2020.

Professor Lim Chwee Teck is the NUS Society Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Health Innovation and Technology at the National University of Singapore. His research interest is in human disease mechanobiology as well as development of innovative microfluidic and wearable technologies for biomedical applications. He is a prolific researcher having co-authored over 450 journal publications including in Nature and Science related journals and given more than 420 plenary/keynote/invited lectures.  He is also a serial entrepreneur having started six companies to commercialise technologies developed in his lab. Professor Lim is globally recognised for his distinguished academic achievements as is evidenced by his elected fellowship at the US National Academy of Inventors, the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering, the International Academy for Medical & Biological Engineering, the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, the Academy of Engineering, Singapore and the Singapore National Academy of Science. He and his team have garnered over 100 research awards and honours including Highly Cited Researcher, IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award, ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, Asian Scientists 100, Credit Suisse Technopreneur of the Year Award, Wall Street Journal Asian Innovation Award (Gold) and the President's Technology Award among others.

Leo IUPESM Fellowship

Associate Professor Leo Hwa Liang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his B.Eng. degree from Leeds University (1996), M.Eng. from Nanyang Technological University (2000),and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology (2001, 2005). Associate Professor Leo’s research interests lies at the intersection of fluid dynamics and medicine, specifically on cardiovascular engineering and biofluids. He is actively involved in the development of various novel medical devices, such as drug screening perfusion platform, artificial liver assist devices, mitral percutaneous heart valves, carotid stents, and left ventricle assist devices. Since 2009, Dr Leo’s lab has generated over 300 peer-reviewed journal papers including 142 journal articles, 162 conference proceedings and book chapters.
