Our hearts go out to the family of Emeritus Professor Lawrence Wong Wai Choong on his passing on 12 October 2022 at the age of 68.

Lawrence Wong was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NUS. He retired in 2019. He joined NUS in 1983 as a lecturer. For 39 years, he held various positions at the department, faculty, and university levels. From January 1998 to June 2000, he served as the Director of the Centre for Instructional Technology. From July 2000 – November 2002, he joined NUS Computer Centre as the Director. He was the Executive Director of the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) from November 2002 to November 2006. He was the Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from January 2008 to October 2009.

Prof Wong received his BSc (1st class Honours) and PhD degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Loughborough University, UK, in 1976 and 1980 respectively. His research interests included wireless networks and systems, multimedia networks, and source-matched transmission techniques. He has over 200 publications and 4 patents in these areas and was a co-author of the book “Source-Matched Mobile Communications”. He received the IEEE Marconi Premium Award in 1989, NUS Teaching Award (1989), IEEE Millennium Award in 2000, the e-innovator Awards in 2000, Open Category, and Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) 2006.

Prof Wong is survived by his wife Annie Ng Lai Keen and their 3 children. Our condolences to them at this difficult time.
