Marvell Asia Pte Ltd has donated $200,000 to fund pioneering microelectronics research at the Singapore Hybrid-Integrated Next-Generation μ-Electronics (SHINE) Centre. Â
The company's gift to SHINE was spearheaded by Dr Radha Nagarajan, Marvell's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Optical and Copper Connectivity Group.Â
The gift will support individuals looking to acquire advanced skills to drive innovation and create new opportunities for growth in the semiconductor industry.Â
Dr Nagarajan is an alumnus of NUS Electrical Engineering and was recently appointed as a visiting professor at NUS. "After careful consultation, we selected SHINE as Marvell Asia's first foray into university research funding," said Dr Nagarajan. He added: "We have a lot of interest in heterogeneous integration of electronics and optics and our goal is to help train the next generation of local engineers specialising in this exciting and promising field."Â
The gift has sparked excitement in students and researchers at SHINE.Â
Liu Paiting, a research student, sees the gift as an opportunity to facilitate collaboration between academia and industry, noting that: "industry funding can provide additional resources that are not always available through traditional academic channels".
Samarth Jain, a research engineer from NUS ECE department, who has been actively involved in Microelectronics Technology Device research work, on learning about the gift said: "Marvell's generosity and support for young researchers could not come at a better time, especially during these challenging times. With the SHINE Centre's expertise and resources, it is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to advance in one's field of study and expertise."
A cheque presentation was held at CDE on May 9 to mark the gift.Â
Other Marvell Asia representatives at the presentation of the gift included Ms Chen Seok Ching, Vice President, Country Manager; Mr Andy Tan, Asia Finance Director; and Dr Ronson Tan, Singapore Optics Team Manager.Â
Representing NUS at the presentation were Professor Teo Kie Leong, Acting Dean of CDE; Professor Aaron Thean, Director of SHINE; and Professor (Practice) Lim Yeow Kheng from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Programme Director of SHINE.  Â
