Yusof Ishak House project recognised at 2023 International Holcim Awards
The Holcim Awards is an annual showcase of contextual and practicable approaches to sustainable construction that was established in 2004 by the Zurich-based organisation.
The Yusof Ishak House (YIH) was part of the master planning of the university campus in the 1970s and was appreciated for its iconic design and sentimental value. It serves as a social and cultural hub for students, staff and visitors, designed to provide large interior-covered spaces as a central focus. NUS architects proposed adaptive reuse and retrofit to achieve net-zero energy target in its operational phase.
The project received a Bronze placing at the 2023 Holcim Awards, with academics from the Department of Architecture cited as project authors.

Inspiring MOE Educators through coding & robotics
In collaboration with the Innovation & Design Programme (iDP), CDE organised a 2-day workshop from 4 – 5 January 2024 titled "Facilitating Classroom Projects Using Coding & Robotics" for 32 MOE educators at the CDE Innovation & Design Hub. The educators taught at various levels, from Primary to Pre-tertiary, and were subject teachers, subject heads and curriculum developers.
This workshop was opened to educators with and without STEM backgrounds. It introduced educators to coding with Arduino microcontrollers and hands-on opportunities to build simple robots. As coding and robotics continue to gain popularity in schools, having exposure to these areas would help educators equip themselves with the knowledge needed to introduce a more hands-on learning approach through simple robotics projects for students and to spark interest in students to explore coding and robotics at a young age. For some educators, this workshop also served as an opportunity for professional development to keep abreast of technological innovation trends.
In addition to workshops, CDE has been ramping up more initiatives to engage and connect with educators through networking sessions and learning journeys to strengthen our outreach efforts, recognising the educators' importance as stakeholders in guiding our prospective students' degree choices.
The Department of Architecture's Material Library
The Department of Architecture proudly unveiled its latest addition - the Material Library, planned and managed by the Design Fabrication Workshop. Conveniently located on the ground floor of SDE3, it sits strategically between the design studio and the Design Fabrication Workshop, bridging the digital design environment and the physical material processing realm. This resource hub targets to boast an impressive collection of up to 300 A4-sized material samples. These samples, sponsored by material suppliers worldwide, have been carefully selected for their relevance to architectural design and construction.

iDP Student Orientation: Bonding and building skills
Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) students recently participated in a week-long orientation where they attended practical workshop sprints covering various topics related to design and prototyping. The workshops included learning about different media production techniques, collaborative cloud design tools, vacuum forming and other essential skills. These just-in-time skills will be helpful when they begin working on their projects in this semester. In addition to the hands-on workshops, the iDP students took part in a leadership camp to bond as a team. Navigating obstacles together, the students left the orientation feeling confident and ready to embark on the new semester in 2024!
The DID.IT Pop-up Store at Science Park 1
The first DID.IT Pop-up Store by the Division of Industrial Design (DID) was open from 22 - 25 January 2024 at Ascent@Science Park. Many in the lunchtime crowd who gathered at the Pop-up Store were interested in finding out about the products from the student and alumni designers supported by DiD's Design Incubation Centre.
Following the good response, more collaborative initiatives between DID and Capitaland are in the pipeline. Stay connected for the latest: @did.nus, @dicnus, @sgsciencepark.
