Uncovering the art of city making

Charles Landry has been consulted by many cities on urban planning, development, and management.
Charles Landry has been consulted by many cities on urban planning, development, and management.

Mr Charles Landry, the man behind the concept of the 'Creative City', recently presented a guest lecture at CDE as part of the NUS Cities Lecture series.

He came up with the concept in the late 1980s, focusing on how cities can create the conditions for people and organisations to think, plan and act with imagination to solve problems and develop opportunities.

Regarded as an international authority on the use of imagination and creativity in urban change, Mr Landry’s evaluation tool – the Creative City Index, conceived with the Basque Country and its main city, Bilbao, has been implemented in 25 cities in Europe and beyond.

In his lecture, Where Next with the Art of City Making?, Mr Landry took his audience through the issues faced by cities and the need to reframe past concepts to usher in a new era of cities, in what he termed “the City and Culture 3.0”.

CDE's Industrial Design faculty join other Singapore creatives at Milan Design Week

Assistant Professor Clement Zheng's Reciproco, and Adjunct Lecturer Tiffany Loy's Mosaic Membrane, were exhibited at Future Impact 2 from 16 to 21 April 2024.

The DesignSingapore Council's Future Impact 2, presented newly commissioned works by Singapore’s designers that demonstrate how design can evolve to create a more sustainable future. Future Impact 2 looks to a new era of design, where technology empowers designers to create a better tomorrow. Participating designers pushed the boundaries of their creative practices and created forward-thinking designs that address pressing global challenges, minimise environmental impact, and reimagine production methods.

The exhibition was part of the Milan Design Week during the Salone del Mobile.Milano, the world’s biggest design event.

About Reciproco:
Asst Prof Zheng, who heads the Interactive Materials Lab, collaborated with independent designer Genevieve Ang on Reciproco, a pair of interactive ceramic installations designed to spread warmth and conviviality. The design sets out to push the limits of digital communication by imagining a new way to connect and sense another person remotely. The ceramic pieces are coated in glaze formulated with glass waste and enhanced with thermochromic paint that changes colour when the surface is activated. It is heated with circuits embedded into the ceramic body that are triggered when touched.

About Mosaic Membrane:
Tiffany Loy collaborated with Italian mosaic experts Friul Mosaic on Mosaic Membrane a project transforming mosaic tiles into skin-like, three-dimensional forma that can function as furniture pieces. Inspired by Milan's La Rotonda del Pellegrini's vaulted ceiling, the project celebrates the fluidity of textile and mosaic materials.

CDE kicks-off Innovus@CDE

Innovus_CDE_Hompage_Banner

Innovus@CDE is a series of events and challenges organised by the CDE Office of Research and Industry to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among research staff, students and alumni. Over the next six months, participants will take part in a variety of talks and workshops, covering topics such as idea generation, product development, and market strategy. These sessions aim to help take their ideas from concepts to working products.

The series kicked off with InnoAWARE@CDE, where participants heard from the founders of CDE start-up Cityscapes. The founders shared the challenges they faced in getting their start-up off the ground and advised the participants on how to avoid the pitfalls they may encounter in their start-up journey.

Mr Chew Chi Ying, co-founder and head of marketing for Cityscapes said “Having an interdisciplinary team has definitely been advantageous for our start-up as we are able to leverage on each other’s expertise to fill in any knowledge gaps or blind spots that we may have when developing our decentralised urban farming solutions .”
