Prof Yeo's lecture highlighted the critical importance of collaboration between academia and industry in driving innovation forward

Often referred to as the "brains" of modern electronics, semiconductors are the foundation of countless technological innovations. From smartphones and computers to medical devices and automotive systems, semiconductors underpin the functionality of a vast array of devices that have become integral to daily life.

In a presentation held on 19 April 2024 as part of the CDE Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series, Professor Yeo Yee Chia (Electrical and Computer Engineering) delved into the crucial role of semiconductor research and its profound impact on the global economy.

His lecture, titled Translating Semiconductor Research to Impact the World, opened with the assertion that semiconductors today are as essential as water, sunlight and air to supporting modern life as we know it. Speaking to a diverse audience of undergraduates, PhD students, researchers, faculty and representatives of industry, Prof Yeo then went on to share his insights into the world of semiconductors gained from a career in both research and industry.

Given the relentless pace of technological change, Prof Yeo, who is currently Assistant Chief Executive at the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), explored how the semiconductor industry is constantly evolving, with companies vying to develop and apply cutting-edge technologies that push the boundaries of what is possible.

CDE welcomes students to campus on Open Day

On 11 May 2024, CDE held its annual Open Day, during which prospective students who had received offer letters from the college were invited to learn more about the programmes they had applied to.

The events kicked off with an opening address by CDE Dean Professor Teo Kie Leong, followed by a rundown on the CDE curriculum by Associate Professor James Kah, Vice Dean of Outreach and Special Projects. Attendees also got to hear from current students about student life at CDE and learn more about the iDP and new Computing second majors offered by the college.

After the informative sessions, the prospective students were divided into smaller groups for more personalised interactions. They had the unique opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations with staff and faculty, gaining deeper insights into the programmes they have been offered. Additionally, attendees were given exclusive tours of various CDE labs, getting a firsthand look at the cutting-edge projects worked on by past undergraduate students.

Amongst the participants at the Open Day was Wilson, who was offered a spot in the Civil Engineering undergraduate programme. When asked about his thoughts regarding the Open Day experience, he said, “It’s a good chance for me to get familiar with the campus. I’m here today to find out more about the options for second majors or minors, and it is quite amazing to see the variety of options available to me.”

CDE-210-min

CDE held an exclusive event on 4 May 2024 to foster meaningful connections with top students who had been offered a place in CDE.

The "Get-to-Know CDE" event provided a chance for prospective students to engage with our faculty, staff, and current students, gaining deeper insights into academic programmes and student life within CDE.

Through interactive discussions and networking opportunities, attendees learned more about the vibrant community and innovative initiatives that define the CDE experience.

Distinguished guests included Senior Vice Provost Prof Bernard Tan, Vice Provost Prof Peter Ho, and Dean of Admissions Prof Goh Say Song, allowing prospective students to connect with NUS leaders and senior representatives from the CDE Deanery.

Workshop on parallel computing

idp-tech-workshop

Just before the start of its summer programmes, the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) and the Research Computing (HPC & Cloud Infrastructure) @ NUS Information Technology organised a workshop on parallel computing at the Innovation and Design Hub @ EA. Researchers, faculty members, and students attended the half-day workshop, which was led by four industry practitioners from TechSource. The organisers facilitated active discussions on research and development in parallel and distributed computing, accelerating application codes, offloading compute tasks using cloud resources, and related topics.
