Research Assistant: “Building Climate Resilience at High Density Cities Using Multi Physical Modelling and Field Measurement”

We are looking for a full-time research assistant to work on research project “Building Climate Resilience at High Density Cities Using Multi Physical Modelling and Field Measurement”.

PROJECT

In the face of climate change and urbanisation, improving resilience of cities is an urgent priority and will increase in importance for decades to come. High-density urban living is an inevitable trend in adapting to rapid urbanisation and climate change. Yet, such high-density nature could pose negative impacts on urban living, such as poor air quality and thermal comfort. Long-term negative impacts increase both intensity and frequency of short-term disruptions.

The project aims to develop an integrated approach to predict the coupling effects of global climate change and urbanization and a robustness-based planning and design system to guide the development of resilient cities. The team will employ numerical simulation, physical modelling, geographic information system (GIS), and analytical modelling, applied to urban planning and design case studies. The design system and tools can be applied to different scales – at the city, district, and neighborhood scale.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidate must have a relevant master degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Urban Climate, or related fields;
  2. Urban-scale simulation of thermal environment, airflow movement and air pollutant transmission;
  3. Field measurement of weather parameters in high-density areas and data collection and analysis;
  4. Good publications;
  5. Strong team spirit and publish research findings;
  6. Good time management and planning;
  7. Assist with project management tasks;
  8. Excellent command of both spoken and written English;
  9. Highly motivated individual with capacity to work independently.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  1. Knowledge in atmospheric sciences, greenery and computational fluid dynamics;
  2. Experience in using environmental simulation tools, such as ANSYS FLUENT, OpenFOAM, ENVI-met or other similar programs;
  3. Experience in carrying out field measurement of weather parameters, such as air temperature, wind velocity and turbulence, globe temperature and etc;
  4. Familiarity with academic writing and have experience in publishing research papers on top-tier journals;
  5. Some knowledge on programming is an advantage.

Postdoc Researcher/Research Associate: “Climate Resilience in High-Density Cities”

We are looking for a full time Post-doctoral researcher to work on Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in the Future Climate Resilience and Climate digital twin studies.

In the face of global climate changes and rapid urbanization, improving the resilience of our high-density cities is an urgent priority nowadays, and it will increase in importance for decades to come. This future resilience project aims to provide a robustness-based planning and design framework to guide and optimize the way of future urban development with the ultimate goal of improving future urban resilience. This framework will be developed based on a comprehensive multi-layer network and it will include multi-scale-physics climate understandings, modelling methods and design solutions. The research project will anticipate the coupling effect of future urbanization and climate change on urban climate, to prepare Singapore and other Asian mega cities to the future climate challenges. The climate digital twin will enable us to analyse the interaction among building performance, urban climate, and atmosphere at multiple scales.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidate must have a relevant Ph.D degree;
  2. Strong team spirit;
  3. Good time management and planning;
  4. Assist with project management tasks;
  5. Highly motivated individual with capacity to work independently.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  1. Capability/hands-on experience with mesoscale models (e.g., Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) with urban canopy model) in urban thermal environment and air pollution simulations;
  2. Familiar with at least one scripting/computer language (e.g. Python, R, Fortran);
  3. Experience in conducting field or laboratory measurements of urban micro climate;
  4. Some knowledge of CFD model and GIS is an advantage;
  5. Excellent command of both spoken and written English.
