Respiration in respite
The project aspires to provide a safe space for meditation and respite to the persona of a patient diagnosed with heart condition. She, having suffered a traumatic experience, feels ‘stuck’ with the trauma for the rest of her life. Hence, this project aims to take her away from her physical conditions, the hospital, the outside world, even for a while, into a world of her own.
To do so, she will be able to go through the process of meditation and scent therapy within the envelope, as if she is entering another world, free from judgements. This can be achieved by providing a suitable environment with thermal comfort.
The envelope is carefully crafted and designed to not only provide a resting space but also to be in harmony with the macro-climate, giving a comfortable interior space. This is achieved through a rigorous process of testing and experimenting with scent types, material covering, structural integrity, form and other factors. The results of these experiments serve as strategies that guide the design process.
The green corridor at King albert park was selected as a suitable site for the meditative exploration. The site was chosen for the presence of a wind corridor that enables the general effects of air flow to be registered within the envelope. Air which is approaching in a less-turbulent manner can be brought into the model eventually to encourage the scent flow within the model. The presence of external scent sources on site also enables a mixing effect between the on-site scent and the external scent types we seek to bring in. This ensures a complete and unique experience for the user, providing her with an ideal environment for scent therapy and meditative peace.
Various experiments were conducted to empirically study behaviour of fragrances and their diffusers.
