NUS Baba House: Dr Nikhil Joshi
The NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road is not just a living heritage museum, it is also a place to learn more about using traditional building materials such as lime plaster in restoration work. Dr Nikhil Joshi, a conservation expert, reflects on why this is important. The NUS Baba House was restored and curated by the NUS Department of Architecture, NUS Museum, The Peranakan Association of Singapore and URA from 2006 to 2008. This video is presented in October 2019 as part of URA’s celebration of 30 years of conservation in Singapore since 1989.
Universal Access
Malika Joshi, a graduate of the MA in Architectural Conservation (MAArC) programme was featured on Channel News Asia (CNA) tonight (19/07/2023) where she spoke about the importance of universal access in historic buildings and her dream of a more inclusive society where everyone can access and enjoy historic buildings comfortably.
As a recipient of the Tun Tan Cheng Lock Scholarship, Malika's research focuses on the importance of inclusivity in heritage building conservation, particularly in an ageing country like Singapore. Her research aims to provide accessibility adaptations for historic buildings, emphasising universal access for people with special needs and senior citizens. The project includes analysing the concept of inclusiveness, providing recommendations for physical and perceptual access, and proposing good practices for making buildings accessible to all.
