Water quality management

What You Will Learn

The course covers fundamental principles of environmental modeling (i.e. mass balance, reaction kinetics and transformation mechanisms) and integrates it with monitoring and sensing technologies for a comprehensive assessment of the water environment. Mathematical models are used to test hypotheses, predict and evaluate water quality problems in natural and man-made systems. These include eutrophication, dissolved oxygen imbalance, the fate and transport of toxic contaminants and pathogens, as well as sediment water column interactions.
The course will enable students to appreciate the problems associated with water quality and provide them with problem solving skills to predict impacts and resolve problems associated with the pollution of the environment.

Who Will Benefit

Civil or Environmental Engineer (i.e. Assistant Engineers, Senior Engineers, Chief Engineers, site engineer, site manager, And Supervisor, Assistant Manager, Section Manager, Operations Manager, CEO, etc.), Environmental Consultant, Governmental officers, Chemical Engineer

Instructor

Gin Yew-Hoong, Karina

Professor Gin Yew-Hoong, Karina

Dr. Karina Gin is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). She holds a ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, an MEng from NUS, and a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on water quality, specifically the dynamics of microbial and chemical pollutants, with an emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, algal blooms, and wastewater surveillance. Dr. Gin has led research projects worth over $16.5 million and has been honored with the Dean’s Chair Award at NUS's Faculty of Engineering. She is an Associate Editor for Environmental Technology & Innovation and co-authored ‘The Environment in Asia Pacific Harbours,’ awarded by the UN Atlas of the Ocean. Additionally, she has received the Technology Enterprise Challenge Innovator Award in Singapore. Dr. Gin has contributed significantly to global water safety and quality discussions, serving in various capacities, including WHO-FAO meetings and WHO expert panels, and as the Chair of the National Committee of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme from 2000 to 2015.
