CDE Dinner and Dance

Loads of fun was had by those who attended the CDE Dinner and Dance!

"CDE's Dinner & Dance was truly an amazing event that brought together so many of us colleagues in a truly special way. I got the chance to meet and interact with colleagues from different departments face-to-face, which was such a great experience. The atmosphere allowed us all to enjoy the time and let loose, making it an awesome and memorable evening that I'll cherish!" Genia Ong, Outreach

"I find this the best D&D I have come across.  The VIPs are asked to go on stage to dance and sing with the staff.  Amazing!" Sally Ng, Office of Finance

After seeing these photos, those who missed the event will surely make a point to attend next year!

Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, Singapore Design Week 2023 explored the future of design through three main themes: Innovation (curated by BLACK), Sustainability (by Kinetic), and Inclusivity (by Lekker).

The event consisted of installations in various locations around Singapore under different exhibition titles based on the three themes mentioned. This was the first real show in Singapore on inclusive design. Addressing the discord in thinking between 'accessibility' vs 'inclusivity' where inclusive design is not just about providing physical access (think wheelchair ramps) but about the lived experience and how design can be empowering with this human touch. This propels design to be more compelling, with transformative outcomes and processes.

Several projects from the Division of Industrial Design (DID)’s alumni and professors were featured this year.

MERGE @ FIND 2023
A showcase dedicated to Southeast Asian contemporary design, curated by Suzy Annetta of Design Anthology, this year’s edition featured the curatorial theme of “CRAFT + INDUSTRY: MAN + MACHINE”, with works by over 50 emerging and established designers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The Emerge exhibition was also featured on Dezeen.

DiD projects featured:

  1. Ghim Moh Pendant Collection, by Associate Professor Hans Tan
  2. NRU Bowl, by Poh Yun Ru (DID Alumni, Class of 2018), Tan Wei Jing (DID Alumni, Class of 2021), Cynthia Chan (DID Alumni, Class of 2021), and Associate Professor Christophe Gaubert
  3. Umbul-Umbul Table Lamp, by Cindy Evangeline (DID Alumni, Class of 2023)
  4. So plastic Small Table Collection, by Karyn Lim (DID Alumni, Class of 2015)
  5. Woven Panel Collection, by Adjunct Assistant Professor Tiffany Loy
  6. Lamp, by Yeo Ker Siang (DID Alumni, Class of 2014) and Desinere

FI&LD was a specially commissioned interactive exhibition that offered a new philosophy in inclusive design based on play and improvisation. It featured some of the best examples of this ethos in practice – from environments to graphics, products, services, and experiences. The installation included experiential demonstrations of inclusive design in five areas: The Emotions, Fun, The Senses, Care, and Social Life and Interaction.

Featured was Rewind, by Poh Yun Ru (DID Alumni, Class of 2018)
Rewind is selected to be exhibited under the theme of Inclusivity, curated by Lekker.  Rewind is a platform that leverages familiar gestures and multi-sensory stimulation to prompt meaningful recollection and social engagement for the elderly with dementia. Designed to evoke memories, Rewind uses a motion-tracking tool that guides the dementia elderly in re-enacting familiar gestures. These actions are then reflected as audio-visual feedback on a paired device, unearthing personal memories that users associate with the sensorial interaction.

School of Tomorrow
With a motto proclaiming “For Earth, For Humans, For All”, the School of Tomorrow was a specially commissioned exhibition curated by Pann Lim of Kinetic Singapore, which taught about sustainability in a fun, immersive way. Through classes covering subjects such as geography, chemistry, social studies, and more, critical environmental issues were introduced.

Another of the Design Incubation Centre's incubation projects, Furmidable Pelts by Cynthia Chan (DID Alumni, Class of 2021), was selected to be exhibited the theme Sustainability, curated by Kinetic. Furmidable explores a new perspective on the relationship between between humans and the environment that surrounds them. The research project aims to implicitly showcase the irony of the canine-human relationship, in which the attachment is unlike any other domestic animal, setting it apart from the animal kingdom. This distinction had long been acknowledged and rendered over the centuries through the development of many breeds, placing the domestic dog at the crossroads of the living and the affective object.
