The paper “Whole Building Energy Model for HVAC Optimal Control: A Practical Framework Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning” was selected as one of the ten best research papers in Energy and Buildings published in the period from 2018 to 2022. The team of former Carnegie Mellon University graduate students was led by Professor Lam Khee Poh (Architecture). These graduates are now working in Johnson Controls, the University of Nottingham in Ningpo, Ghafari Associates, and included Assistant Professor Adrian Chong (NUS Built Environment).

Zhiqi

Our congratulations to Ms Low Zhiqi from the Office of Undergraduate Programmes, on being awarded the DE Influencer Award 2023!

This award recognizes staff who have made a significant impact on the NUS community by encouraging the adoption of Digital Enablement tools.

Adjunct Professor Quek Gim Pew was honoured with the prestigious Outstanding Service Award as part of the NUS University Awards 2023. The Award was presented to Mr Quek at a ceremony held at Singapore's Raffles Hotel on the evening of 8 September. Mr Quek is currently Chairman of the National Supercomputing Centre Steering Committee and Co-Chair of National Quantum Steering Committee. Commenting on the award and his long-running ties to the University, he said: “NUS has nurtured generations of talents over the years and contributed much to the success story of Singapore. It is my fervent wish that NUS will continue to spearhead our country’s growth and development through its leadership, excellence and dynamism.”

  • Dr Pragati Aashna (a Research Fellow under Associate Professor Aaron Danner) will be awarded the IEEE Women in Photonics travel grant at the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) for 12-16 Nov 2023, Orlando, Florida, USA.
  • Li Sifan, a former PhD student under the mentorship of Associate Professor Ang Kah-Wee, received the Young Researcher Award at the 2023 International Conference on Solid-State Devices and Materials (SSDM). Their groundbreaking paper, "Neural Network Hardware Accelerator using Memristive Crossbar Array based on Wafer-Scale 2D HfSe2," has shattered barriers in AI hardware acceleration. This research showcases the world's first successful implementation of neural network computations using massive 2D hafnium diselenide (HfSe2) memristive crossbar arrays. Ceramics

Ceramic Circuits, a project led by Assistant Professor Clement Zheng of the Division of Industrial Design (DID) at CDE, has been awarded the Grand Prize at the 7th He Chao Zong Cup (De Hua) International Ceramics Industry Design Competition held recently in China. The project integrates interactive circuits into glazed ceramic objects to turn them into computational interfaces, creating items such as touch-sensitive tableware, temperature-sensing tiles and moisture-sensing plant pots. The prestigious competition attracted 5,327 entries from across the globe, encompassing a range of themes from which 50 projects including Ceramic Circuits were invited to present their work in person.
