funeral chair

The Funeral Chair is meant to be used in a typical Singaporean’s funeral wake which is usually held at the void decks of HDB flats. The concept evokes a sense of respect towards the dead, with ‘solemn’ being one of the key semantics.

Symbols and forms derived from the Chinese culture with respect to death are explored before arriving at the final form. Straight lines instill a sense of quietness and seriousness while the idea of the sole curve, derived from tombstones, amplifies the effect.
