R Brian Stone is an accomplished Associate Professor of Design whose expertise spans motion design, interaction design, information visualization, and user experience. He is well-known for his award-winning teaching and creative work that nurture innovative approaches in these fields. Professor Stone co-founded the MODE Summit, a biennial international conference dedicated to motion design education research and practice, and co-edited The Theory and Practice of Motion Design, a key publication in the discipline.
He has held academic appointments at prestigious institutions including the National University of Singapore, University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and The Ohio State University, where he took on leadership roles such as graduate studies chair and serving on the promotion and tenure committee. His teaching excellence has been recognized by awards such as the Apple Distinguished Educator, the Ratner Distinguished Teaching Award, and the National University of Singapore’s Annual Teaching Excellence Award. Additionally, he is a National University of Singapore Teaching Academy Fellow (NUSTA).
Beyond academia, Brian Stone is a multi-faceted individual with interests in antique cars, world travel, and playing the steel pan drum. He is also multilingual, speaks seven languages, and is an author whose recent book, Stories, Quips, and Quotes: A Designer’s Guide to Teaching and Learning, shares engaging insights and practical advice for educators and creative professionals. His international experience includes visiting professorships across South and Central America, East and Southeast Asia, and Europe, reflecting his global impact on design education.
