Exploring new application of Dyson’s Motor and Cyclone technology

Dyson’s mission is to engineer solutions to problems that others ignore. It began with one man and one stubborn idea – James Dyson, who persevered through 5,127 prototypes to solve the problem of clogged vacuum cleaner bags and the loss of suction. With it, he had invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner with patented Cyclone technology that uses centrifugal force to separate dust and dirt from the airflow.

In 1999, Dyson engineers and scientists started working on new technology that would prove just as revolutionary as the first bagless vacuum. A motor so small and power dense that it could generate power never seen before in a cord-free vacuum. It would mean completely rethinking existing technology, and unlocking a whole new format of vacuum.

Dyson digital motor technology has greatly advanced since then; it now sits at the heart of many game-changing machines – the Dyson V11 Absolute cord-free vacuum cleaner, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, the Dyson Airwrap styler, and the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, to name a few. The small, light, and yet powerful Dyson motor has revolutionized the way people clean their homes, and care for their hair and their personal well-being.

Through this course, you will put your innovation and problem-solving muscles to the test. You will work in groups to tackle the opportunity statement, and explore new and innovative application for one of Dyson’s patented digital motors and cyclone technology.

Some of the questions that the team will be looking at are:

• What are the problems that could potentially be solved by applying this motor and cyclone technology?
• What are the potential market areas could this motor and cyclone technology be applied to?
• What are the further innovations or considerations needed to make it viable in these other areas?
• What are the potential business models?
• How the technical and business viability is assessed and validated?

As part of the course experience, you will also be given access to Dyson engineers, who will be able to provide mentorship and give valuable feedback to validate your ideas.

Exploring opportunities with Matter: an emerging IoT smart-home standard

igloocompany is a smart access company that develops, designs, and manufactures smart locks and lock boxes. Initially established under the name igloohome, the company set out to create “a world without keys,” quickly establishing partnerships with companies like Airbnb to provide solutions for single family homes and rental properties. The company and its team have grown to include an enterprise-focused vertical, iglooworks, which caters to large-scale access management. igloocompany is headquartered in Singapore with 100 employees with 13 regional offices worldwide.

It’s algoPIN technology is extremely useful in low-cost smart access management. They have a range of software solutions to enable our hardware. igloohome is the end user app primarily used by consumers to control, provision access and monitor the usage of any lock. It’s iglooworks is an enterprise solution that allows additional functionality & premium features via a web dashboard. iglooconnect is an app store that allows end users to easily connect locks to an ecosystem of their choice.

Matter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_(standard)) is a new connectivity standard that is taking the consumer smart home ecosystem by a storm.

Involvement in the project has allowed NEC to verify the quality of the platform for use in city management and businesses, leading to the launch of a security-enhanced platform service utilizing FIWARE.

(*FIWARE stands for “Future Internet-ware,” and is a next-generation Internet middleware platform developed by FI-PPP in order to enhance Europe’s competitiveness in next-generation Internet technology and support the development of smart applications in social and public spheres.

Standing for Future Internet Public-Private Partnership, FI-PPP implemented a five-year project starting in 2011 with a budget of 300 million euros as an ICT project under the EU 7th Framework Programme.)

NEC is promoting the smart city project aimed at creating social values that enable the realization of a “safe”, “secure”, “efficient” and “equal” society. Since the utilization of various data across the boundaries of organizations and business fields is important for the implementation of the smart city, the active utilization of an information platform is critical for this purpose.

NEC built a data utilization platform compliant with FIWARE, which is an open platform developed in Europe, and is using this information platform to provide services to local governments and area developers
