Administrative Structure

Students will be administrated by the Faculty of Engineering through the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. It is envisaged that Department will have its own administrative set-up to administer its research students, similar to that of the other departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

Admission Requirements

The prevailing requirements for admission to research degrees shall apply.   The minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Lower) or its equivalent.  Candidates applying for direct admission to the PhD programme are expected to obtain at least a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Upper) or its equivalent.

International candidates are expected to submit their TOEFL and GRE test scores in support of their applications.  Candidates are also expected to have the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

For more information on application, fees, graduate scholarship, please refer to Graduate, Faculty of Engineering (https://cde.nus.edu.sg/graduate/).

Candidature

The minimum and maximum periods of candidatures of the regular MEng and PhD programmes shall also apply to students of this discipline.

Programme Requirements

The PhD degree requires:

  • completion of at least 24 Modular Credits (MC) technical modules; &
  • Students must obtain a Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.5; &
  • a satisfactory grade in the Graduate English Course (Basic & Intermediate Level), for students who do not qualify for wavier of English Language requirement; &
  • a satisfactory grade ES5101 Technical Communications for Engineers. Compulsory for PhD students admitted Academic Year 2017/18 Semester 1 onwards
  • obtain a satisfactory grade for Faculty module EG5911 Research Methodology & Ethics (Compulsory, to be completed in first semester)
  • pass Comprehensive and Oral PhD Qualifying Examinations within first 2 years into candidature;
  • pass PhD thesis and Oral Defense

Module Requirements:

Each MEng student is required to complete 16 modular credits (MC), equivalent to 4 modules (assuming 4 MC per module), before graduation. Among these 4 modules, the 3 Core modules are compulsory. The remaining 1 module can be from the Elective modules list, or with maximum 1 non-core non-elective (NCE) modules.

Each PhD student is required to complete 24 modular credits (MC), equivalent to 6 modules (assuming 4 MC per module), before graduation. Among these 6 modules, the 3 Core modules are compulsory.
