Researchers led by Assistant Professor Tural Khudiyev have developed the world’s first touchscreen built into a garment, opening up possibilities for clothing that can display information, respond to touch and connect to digital devices. The device is based on a new type of electronic fibre that can both display images and sense touch. By integrating

Assistant Professor Andrew Barnabas Wong from the NUS Department of Materials Science and Engineering received the Robert Brown Promising Researcher Award from Singapore’s Ministry of Education in December 2025. The award recognises promising early-career researchers and provides additional support to develop their research. Asst Prof Wong’s associated MOE Academic Research Fund Tier 2 project investigates

In quantum materials, electrons can behave in unexpected ways. Rather than moving independently, they may interact strongly with one another, giving rise to unusual metallic, insulating and superconducting states. Understanding how these interactions shape the flow of electrical current remains one of the central challenges in quantum materials research. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) offers an

Congratulations to Professor Ong Shyue Ping of the NUS Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who has been elected a Fellow of the International Society of Materials Modeling (ISMM). The Fellow distinction is one of the Society’s highest honours and is deliberately selective, with the number of living Fellows limited to 100 worldwide. Election recognises

Combining semiconductor functionality with controllable magnetism is a longstanding goal in spintronics. Conventional electronics manipulate the charge of electrons, while spintronics seeks to additionally use their spin to store and process information, potentially enabling new forms of low-power logic and memory. A key challenge, however, is finding materials that combine robust magnetic order with the

Joining NUS CDE under the Returning Singaporean Scientists Scheme, Professor Shyue Ping Ong is building a connected system of AI, scientific data and automated experiments to change how new materials are discovered.

Assistant Professor Wei Mingyang is one of the two faculty members from the College of Design and Engineering (CDE) who has been named National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellows in the Class of 2026. The NRF Fellowship gives outstanding early-career scientists and engineers the freedom and funding to lead independent research programmes in Singapore. The Fellowship

On September 21, 2026, the KAIST–NUS MSE Joint Workshop was successfully held at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), bringing together faculty and researchers from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS-MSE) for a day

Kicking off the semester with our first MSE Students’ Club Bonding! On 26 August, the MSE Students’ Club hosted its very first Club Bonding Event!  They started the event by introducing their new EXCO team, followed by some high-energy icebreakers to welcome some fresh faces! Things quickly got competitive when everyone was split into their

As transistors inside microchips continue to shrink, the metal wiring that connects them is becoming a growing obstacle to faster, more energy-efficient chips. Narrower wires have greater electrical resistance, while smaller gaps between them increase interference between adjacent signals. These effects impede data transfer and raise energy consumption — an issue known as interconnect bottleneck,

Solar-driven biohybrid systems could one day use sunlight, semiconductor materials and living cells to produce useful chemicals. But designing them more effectively requires a clearer understanding of what happens at the tiny interface where biological and artificial components meet. Researchers have developed an imaging platform that can track electron transfer between individual bacterial cells and

Graphene could help enable a new generation of low-power electronic devices based on spintronics, an approach that uses the spin of electrons rather than their charge to store and process information. However, progress has been limited by imperfections at the interfaces where electrical contacts meet graphene, which can disrupt spin information before it is detected.
