Final Year Design Project
The project aims to provide students with training for scientific or technical research. The module involves an assignment of a research project, equipment training and safety education. A student needs to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week working on the 1-year FYP project under the guidance of the project supervisor and co-supervisor. A thesis is required at the end of the semester, including literature survey, materials and method, results and discussion, and suggestions for further study. Presentations are required. This module is targeted at all level 4000 materials science and engineering students.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)
UROP is an individual academic research project you would undertake typically over two semesters or during the Special Term* anytime after your first semester, but before your final year. Successful completion of UROP counts as a 4-MC Unrestricted Elective Module (UEM). UROP is recommended if you are on the Research-focused Pathway (RfP), but equally so if you simply wish to learn the skills of independent research. You may be supervised by a professor within the MSE Department, or you may choose a project in another department, allowing you exposure to a different engineering discipline.
*Special Term fees apply if you choose to be on UROP over this period.
Explore Young Entrepreneurism Project
To foster innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of young people, improve the practical ability of undergraduate students in Singapore in new product development, the Department of Materials Science Engineering (MSE) in NUS has jointly launched the “E.Y.E”(Explore Young Entrepreneurism) innovative video contest with Fortune Times, a leading Chinese business magazine in Southeast.
MLE4213 – Innovation and New Product Development offered by the Department of MSE, E.Y.E is target for the MSE year-4 students. Different from the traditional teaching, the E.Y.E project requires students working as a team to develop new products and the business proposal, and produce a video within 1 minute, with the unique selling point of products. Through posting the video clip on social media platform, the student will explore the entire process of a product from design and development to product marketing. Through the curriculum theory and practice offered, students will increase proficiency and mastery.
