At the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), we inspire students by pushing academic boundaries for greater innovation. The interconnection of engineering, architecture and design enables a multidisciplinary and innovative environment for undergraduates and researchers. This allows us to develop solutions for demanding issues that arise from technology, sustainability, and the environment.

Our goal is to educate the next generation of materials scientists with pioneering technological and scientific knowledge. We nurture adaptable and technically proficient engineers to undertake complex tasks that lead to promising employment opportunities. Students can expand their competencies in various materials domains to address Singapore’s increasingly diverse design and engineering professions. We seek to attract the brightest students by bringing together the best academics and industrialists to provide outstanding education in materials science.

About Professor Hardy Chan

More than a distinguished researcher, Prof. Hardy Chan is also an excellent educator. He is a charismatic lecturer, who could capture the attention of the students and is well remembered by the alumni for his interesting and engaging lecturesOver the years, Prof. Hardy Chan taught and mentored undergraduate students, advised Masters and PhD students, postdocs and worked with visiting academics and scientists. In 1995, he was awarded Best Lecturer in Materials Science.

In the early 1990’s, Prof. Hardy Chan and a handful of his colleagues in Chemistry Department and Physics Department pursued an idea. This small group of academics championed the founding of the first Materials Science Program in the Faculty of Science and in Singapore. From this program emerged the Materials Science Department in 1997 with Prof. Hardy Chan served as its Founding Head.

In the 1990s, it was a challenge to form a new program or department, however Prof. Hardy Chan motivated and bonded a handful of staff together, laying a strong foundation for the development of Materials Science Department. Years later the name Engineering was added to the department’s name, becoming the Department of Materials Science and Engineering under NUS College of Design and Engineering.

Gifting
Options

Student Scholarships and Bursaries

You have the flexibility to fund either a full-term scholarship or a renewable annual scholarship. You can also opt to contribute to bursaries that enable students to focus on their tertiary experience and learning aptitude. If both government and NUS loans are insufficient, bursaries will be disbursed to students for additional financial assistance. Donors can opt to fulfil their gift as a multi-year pledge and to support students by nationality or academic interest.

Supporting Academia and
Fellowships

Professorships

Your gift allows hiring of dedicated professors to spearhead the faculty’s research, education, and innovation accomplishments. For endowed professorships, your benefaction enables academia to pursue new lines of research while developing innovative teaching methods that sustain the University’s reputation for academic excellence. When you gift an endowed fellowship to MSE, talented young academics will have the guidance and mentorship of senior faculty members to sharpen their research skills.
