30 NUS researchers among the world’s most highly cited researchers

Global list of influential scientific minds recognises NUS researchers for consistently achieving high citation counts over a decade

Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) are among the world’s most influential scientific minds in the fields of Chemistry, Computer Science & Engineering, Economics & Business, Engineering, Environment/Ecology, Material Science, Mathematics, Physics and more.

A total of 30 NUS researchers have been named in the global Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list, which was released by Clarivate Analytics today. These outstanding NUS researchers were identified by their peers as prominent researchers whose research have consistently supported and inspired other researchers from across the globe.

The annual list of Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivate Analytics acknowledges researchers with multiple papers ranking in the top one per cent by citations for their field and year. This year, a new cross-field category has been introduced to acknowledge researchers with substantial influence in several fields, breaking through the artificial walls of conventional disciplinary categories to keep the Highly Cited Researchers list contemporary and relevant.

The Highly Cited Researchers 2018 is based on a survey of highly cited papers in science and social sciences journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection between 2006 and 2016. This year, some 4,000 Highly Cited Researchers globally are named in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences. Approximately 2,000 additional researchers have also been identified as having exceptional performance based on high impact papers in several fields.

The number of highly cited researchers from NUS has been increasing steadily over the years. With the introduction of the new category, the number of NUS researchers named in the Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list more than doubled the number in 2017. Among the 30 NUS researchers named in the 2018 list, 13 were named under the cross-field category in recognition for their cross-disciplinary work.

NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye said, “We are heartened to see an increasing number of NUS researchers making their mark as top researchers in their fields, contributing to Singapore’s research community and influencing the world with their scientific excellence. This is a testament of NUS’ strong commitment in growing and nurturing exceptional research talent who are inspirational and capable of making a difference to the world. We are proud of the achievements and growing impact of the highly talented researchers at NUS.”

“The NUS researchers who have been named under the cross-field category also attest to the multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative research environment NUS provides for our researchers, enabling them to work closely with researchers, institutions and companies across different disciplines to innovate for the betterment of the society,” Prof Tan added.

Annette Thomas, CEO of the Scientific & Academic Research group at Clarivate Analytics warmly congratulated the researchers on their appearance in this year’s list. She said, “Congratulations to your distinguished group of researchers at NUS. The advancement of scientific endeavour represents a critical activity for individual research institutions and entire nations. The Highly Cited Researchers 2018 list helps to identify the researchers who are having the greatest impact on the research community as measured by the rate at which their work is being cited by others and that contributes so greatly to extending the frontier and gaining knowledge and innovations for society – contributions that make the world healthier, safer, richer, and more sustainable.”
