NUS Faculty of Engineering has been ranked among the world’s top 20 universities for five of seven Engineering subjects according to ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2016 published on 15 June. It is in the top five in the world for Energy Science & Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.
Speaking on NUS’ stellar performance, NUS Engineering Dean Professor Chua Kee Chaing, “I’m very pleased that NUS Engineering has done well. We are within the top 25 globally in 6 of the 7 Engineering subjects ranked, with 2 among the top 5. Considering that our history is much shorter than most of the institutions ranked ahead of us, we have indeed made significant progress since the Faculty was established.”
Prof Chua highlighted the factors which contributed to NUS Engineering’s favourable global standing, such as being able to attract top academic staff and students, providing them with a good educational and research environment equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as sufficient funding and support to enable them to produce impactful work.
Dr Snow Wang, Ranking Manager at ShanghaiRanking Consultancy Ltd said, “NUS had outstanding performance in ShanghaiRanking’s subject rankings against not only universities from the Asia Pacific region, but also top universities from other parts of the world. This performance made NUS the second best performing university from the Asia Pacific region in the engineering subject rankings after Tsinghua University, which was ranked top 20 in 6 subjects.”
Dr Wang said that a driving factor for NUS’ leading position in the rankings is the University’s research quality. For Energy Science & Engineering, NUS scored the maximum score of 100 for Most Cited Researchers, placing the department at the 3rd position worldwide.
NUS Chemical Engineering’s strong performance in the indicators for number of most-cited engineering research papers worldwide, as well as the indicator measuring how the number of citations received by NUS’ publications compares with the average number of citations received by similar publications in the Scopus research database, is a testament to the high quality and great impact of NUS’ research in the field, she added.
