The Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) at NUS is growing fast and we expect to double our faculty count over the next few years.

About Materials Science & Engineering:

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering at NUS has close to 30 full-time faculty members and over 80 research staff members. The University and our outstanding department have been consistently ranked among the top in the world in a variety of international rankings with copious contributions and breakthrough achievements in areas of research and innovation – clinching numerous national and international awards and recognitions.  In 2019, five MSE members were recognized among the world’s most highly cited researchers, whose research in one or more fields have consistently supported and inspired other researchers globally (Clarivate Analytics, 2019). In addition to research, we were ranked as the Top 4 department in Asia for Teaching (Times Higher Education 2020). These awards and recognition has further allowed us to attract a wide range of research grants and funds from industry partners and the government.

The Department seeks dynamic and passionate candidates who possesses excellent communication skills, a passion for teaching, leadership skills and the ability to actively contribute to the MSE department and the outreach activities of NUS. A senior faculty candidate would be expected to have a strong sponsored research and publication record, be highly experienced in teaching and mentoring, and providing leadership and vision. A junior faculty candidate would have demonstrated, or shown a clear potential for, significant creativity and independence. The successful candidate must be able to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels in the above disciplines and develop active externally sponsored research programmes.

The remuneration package is globally competitive, with a flexible wage system, composed of an annual base salary and a performance bonus component for good performers, and attractive work-life benefits such as childcare and exam leave. Aside from the remuneration package, faculty members are able to access world -class facilities in nano-characterizations (HR-TEM, nano-lithography, etc.)

Generous start-up packages are available for newly recruited faculty members to facilitate the establishment of their research programmes. Outstanding candidates are also encouraged to also apply for the Presidential Young Professorship (PYP , with up to 1 million USD fund), or the National Research Foundation Fellowship (with over 2 million USD in research fund).

With the start-up friendly ecosystem in Singapore, MSE faculties can also access exciting prospective to commercialize innovations, with subsidies and a range of incubation and funding opportunities to help promote R&D, for example, the National Research Foundation’s Early Stage Venture Fund, etc.
