Overview of the BEng (Materials Science and Engineering)

The MSE programme at NUS is a four-year undergraduate programme that combines a solid foundation in solid-state physics and chemistry with practical aspects of materials design and engineering. Besides theoretical training, experimental work forms a crucial component of the MSE curriculum, paving the way for students to specialise in their desired career paths in research, industry practice or technopreneurship.

Why Materials Science and Engineering Matters

MSE is crucial because materials are the foundation of virtually every technology and product in modern society. By understanding, designing, and optimising materials, MSE enables advancements across countless industries, from healthcare to energy, transportation, and electronics.

From developing high-temperature alloys for jet engines to flexible materials for wearable electronics or shape-memory polymers for minimally invasive surgeries, MSE bridges the gap between science and engineering, enabling innovation in technologies by tailoring material properties for specific needs.

YEAR 1
You will begin your journey by establishing a solid foundation in engineering, mathematics and science, complemented by an introduction to data analytics and project management. Engagement in MSE student club activities will broaden your networks and provide insights into the field, enhancing the campus experience.

YEAR 2
The curriculum deepens with core principles of Materials Science and Engineering courses, including an introduction to artificial intelligence. The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programme (UROP) is available for students interested in exploring research opportunities early in their academic career.

YEAR 3
Opportunities for international exposure are available through student exchange programmes at prestigious universities worldwide. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) programme offers insights into the startup culture. Industrial attachments and vacation internships provide practical exposure to the materials industries, enriching your understanding and experience.

YEAR 4
You will apply your comprehensive knowledge of materials to address industrial challenges. The Final Year Project also offers a range of research opportunities, allowing you to explore advanced topics. Hands-on experience in materials processing and exploration of machine learning’s impact on materials development will equip you with innovative skills in the field.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science Engineering Programme was awarded re-accreditation for students graduating from the programme from AY 2020/2021 to 2024/2025 by the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) in 2021 October.  The re-accreditation is conducted every five years by IES to certify the MSE programme at NUS in satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering at the professional level.  The accreditation is recognized by the signatories to the Washington Accord,  including representatives from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.  The MSE programme at NUS was fully accredited in 2012 and the accreditation has covered students graduating from the programme since the first cohort.
