NUS Team beats 146 teams worldwide to win the 2018 HILTI IT Competition

THE NUS team (NUS AR Lab), comprising NGS PhD students, Terence Siew, Miko Chang and He Fan, supervised by Assoc Prof Soh Khim Ong and Prof Andrew Nee from NUS Mechanical Engineering, won the top prize from 147 entries worldwide to clinch the Champion of the 2018 HILTI IT Competition with theme Augmented Reality (AR) and Internet of Things (IoT) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 28 March 2018. The other team members include Wang Xin and Li Wenkai. Judging criteria are based on innovation, originality, design, mutual benefit, quality, technical feasibility, sustainability and presentation. All five students are from NGS.

Seven finalist teams converged in Kuala Lumpur over a 4-day period, facing a panel of 9 judges, looking for technical and scientific merits as well as management and entrepreneurial skills on how to implement the concept successfully in industry. The assessment was done in two rounds, first round for the scientific merits, and the second round on implementation plans. The winning team receives a paid study trip, which includes airfare and five-night stay at one of the Hilti's strategic locations, including USA and Liechtenstein.

HILTI Corporation is a Liechtenstein Multinational company that develops, manufactures and markets products for the construction, building maintenance and mining industries. This is the 6th competition they have organized and the first time NUS has entered the competition.
