Team Bumblebee based at the NUS College of Design and Engineering have been awarded first prize at Robosub 22 - an international competition in which student teams design and build robotic submarines, known as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV).

The event is held at the University of Maryland in the USA and saw 39 teams enter this year's competition.

Robosub 22 marked 25 years of the competition and the first time the event had returned to in-person attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The challenge aims to get the teams to showcase their AUV's performance through autonomous completion of a range of tasks representing research and real-world applications.

Tasks set in the competition include maintaining heading and depth, attitude control, navigation and dropping a marker or launching a torpedo.

'Skills and perseverance'

Congratulating Team Bumblebee in a post on Instagram, NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye said the team had shown "great skills and perseverance" and the University was proud of their achievements.

Team Bumblebee was formed in 2012 to build and design autonomous maritime vehicles capable of navigating underwater and on the water surface and performing specialised tasks without any remote-control assistance.

The multidisciplinary team comprises NUS researchers and undergraduates from Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering as well as Computer Science.
